Sophomore and middle school math team win big

RE's upper and middle school math teams are reaching new heights: A few days after Solon Sun '25 learned that he became only the second Ransom Everglades student ever to qualify for the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad, RE's powerful middle school math team of Joshie Khohayting '28, Alex Tevelow '28, Daniel Li '28, Maxie Wu '28 and Ella Wang '27 finished second at the Florida math state championship on March 10 in Orlando – one of the RE's best finishes ever.
Khohayting finished 11th individually at the 2023 Florida Engineering Society Mathcounts State Competition, which included more than 200 participants from 40 schools across the state. Tevelow almost cracked the top 20; he finished 21st overall. RE's team of four seventh graders and one eighth grader trailed only Abraham Lincoln Middle School of Gainesville. RE's team was coached by Jessica Merrick and Ed Lally.

Sun advanced to the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad, a six-question, two-day, nine-hour essay/proof examinations, based on his scores on the American Mathematics Competition 10 and American Invitational Mathematics Examination. He works under upper school math team coach Karen Key.
