I am thrilled to teach ninth- and tenth-grade English at Ransom Everglades. Celebrating the ideas, perspectives, and abilities that students bring to discussions and their writing is, to me, one of the most rewarding aspects of the classroom experience. In my most recent past, I taught eighth-grade English in Houston, Texas, and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Literature on an Inprint C. Glenn Cambor Fellowship at the University of Houston while teaching college rhetoric and composition as well as creative writing. Previously, I was a Fulbright Fellow teaching English in Brazil and I received the Rachel St. Paul Poetry Prize at the University of Virginia, my undergraduate alma mater. Additionally, I have worked as a poetry teacher and camp counselor at the UVA Young Writers Workshop summer intensive program. Literature aside, I enjoy singing, dancing, theatre, tennis, and art museums.

My goal is simple: to teach the whole student. I am a Miami local with a deep connection to our community and its history. At Ransom Everglades, I teach Advanced American Studies and coach middle school swimming, and I have also taught AP World History, AP U.S. History and U.S. History. I arrived at RE in 2021 with 16 years of teaching experience at the high school and university level – most recently at Florida International University, where I taught History and Rhetoric & Composition. I currently serve as a consultant for Ballad of America, Inc., a non-profit that teaches U.S. history through music. I am the lead editor of an edited volume of scholarly works on Triscornia, Havana's early-twentieth-century immigration processing center. I earned my undergraduate degrees from Florida State University (double major in political science and English) and my graduate degrees from Florida International University (MA, Modern U.S. History; PhD, Latin American History). My writing has appeared in various publications including The Washington Post. I enjoy spending time with my family, especially at the beach.

I am thrilled to teach Algebra 1 in the middle school. Before beginning this chapter at Ransom Everglades, I taught a variety of math classes at iPrep Academy, a PK-12 magnet school in Miami-Dade County. While I was there, I also enjoyed working with the middle and high school math teams, serving as a class sponsor, and facilitating professional development for teachers across the district. I am a proud graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators!), and since moving to South Florida I have immersed myself in the community with a wide range of volunteering and service activities. In my free time, you can find me reading a good book, watching college football, or cooking something new.

As a faculty member in the middle school science department, I have taught Integrated Science 1 and 2, Intro to Robotics, as well as created a STEAM elective. As the 7th-grade dean, I am excited to help guide the students in their academic journeys through middle school and help them overcome any obstacles they may encounter. I co-founded the Ransom Everglades Climate Symposium and have coached swimming, soccer and water polo at both the middle school and varsity levels. Prior to joining Ransom Everglades, I was a mentor for high school students at the Miami Museum of Science IMPACT program. I received my BA from Florida International University and an MS in Natural Science Education from Colorado State University. In my free time I enjoy spending time and traveling with my wife, Amy, and our three children Emmett, Cora and Arthur.

Literature is a window into the human experience. That’s what I love experiencing with my students everyday at Ransom Everglades Middle School. I previously taught at RE's upper school and currently teach freshman writing courses and Introduction to Humanities at Florida International University. Before working at RE, I  taught middle school at a charter school in Miami-Dade County. I am a first generation American of Jamaican descent and originally from Brooklyn, N.Y.. I graduated from the University of Miami (Proud ‘Cane) in 2014 with a BA in Creative Writing and Religious Studies and earned an MA in Africana Studies with a concentration in African-American Literature from New York University. Outside of academia, I love spending time with my husband, writing, singing and traveling.
Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida. Ransom Everglades School produces graduates who "believe that they are in the world not so much for what they can get out of it as for what they can put into it." The school provides rigorous college preparation that promotes the student's sense of identity, community, personal integrity and values for a productive and satisfying life, and prepares the student to lead and to contribute to society.
