An all-girls middle school math team from Ransom Everglades won the 2025 Miami Mathcounts competition hosted by the Florida Engineering Society on February 15, advancing to the state championship in Daytona Beach. Ivy Chen '30, Esha Nagalla '29, Sofiya Dewan '29 and Maya Lee-Schonfeld '30 came in first place in the overall competition and ciphering round. The team will head to the 2025 Florida Mathcounts State Competition on March 14 (Pi Day), hoping to match or improve upon RE's two straight second-place finishes there.
Nine Ransom Everglades students – Andrew Gedde '25, Robert Li '26, Daniel Li '28, Solon Sun '25, Gabriel Karsenti '26, Minnie Zhou '26, Joshie Khohayting '28, Alex Tevelow '28 and Aarav Jindal '26 – were among the top-performing students in the nation on a recent set of math exams. The students excelled on the American Mathematics Competitions 10 or 12 (depending on their grade level), qualifying for the American Invitation Mathematics Examination (AIME) – a rare distinction earned by less than 5 percent of test takers.
Putting a memorable stamp on an incredible season for the Ransom Everglades middle school math team, Daniel Li '28 and math team coach Jessica Merrick helped Florida's state math team to a fifth place in the 2024 RTX MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington, D.C., as various RE math team members collected other end-of-year recognitions.
RE students swept the middle school portion of a county math competition for girls and scored top honors in the high school competition at the University of Miami. At the INTEGIRLS Miami Spring 2024 Competition on April 14, Minnie Zhou '26 finished first in the high school individual competition and partnered with Sirja Joeveer '25 to finish first in the team event. Maxie Wu ’28 finished first and Sofiya Dewan ’29 finished second in the middle school individual event and, in the middle school team competition Wu, Dewan, Andrea Medina ’28 and Esha Nagalla ’29 claimed first place and Maya Lee-Schonfeld ’30, Ria Bhandari ’28 and Alyssa Wang ’30 took second.
Ransom Everglades' middle school math team wrapped up an incredible season with a second-place finish in the 2024 Florida Mathcounts State Competition in Orlando March 29 as Daniel Li '28 finished third individually. Li became the first-ever RE middle schooler to qualify for the national championship, and coach Jess Merrick was named coach of the national team. RE's Joshie Khohayting '28 finished eighth overall, and Alex Tevelow '28 and Maxie Wu '28 each finished in the top 25 percent of competitors. Alternate Sofiya Dewan '29 also excelled,supporting the performance.
Ransom Everglades' middle school math team won first place in the annual MathCounts team competition at Miami Dade College on Feb. 24, as three RE mathletes finished in the top four individually. Joshie Khohayting '28 earned second place; Alex Tevelow '28, third;and Daniel Li '28 finished fourth in the field of 219 students representing 29 teams. With the title, Ransom Everglades easily advanced to the March 29 Florida State Competition in Orlando.
Joshie Khohayting '28 and Daniel Li '28 highlighted excellent results for Ransom Everglades in a pair of recent math competitions, as both earned perfect scores on a national middle school math exam and also finished in the top 2.5 percent on a 10th-grade math exam known as the American Mathematics Competition 10 (AMC 10). RE's middle and upper school math teams also claimed a host of top-five finishes in a pair of regional high school math competitions in late January and early February.
Andrew Gedde '25 won first place in the Open Probability competition of the Florida math state championship April 14-15 in Orlando, leading a team of Ransom Everglades students that scored top-10 finishes in six team events and top-20 results in seven individual events.
In news from the middle school, Maxie Wu '28 received a Young Women in Mathematics Award after scoring among the top eight girls from Florida and 142 girls nationwide on The Mathematical Association of America American Mathematics Competition 8 exam.
RE's upper and middle school math teams are reaching new heights: A few days after Solon Sun '25 learned that he became only the second Ransom Everglades student ever to qualify for the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad, RE's powerful middle school math team of Joshie Khohayting '28, Alex Tevelow '28, Daniel Li '28, Maxie Wu '28 and Ella Wang '27 finished second at the Florida math state championship on March 10 in Orlando – one of the RE's best finishes ever.
RE's middle school math team won first place in the 2023 Miami Mathcounts championship Feb. 17, earning a berth in the state tournament. Five RE students finished in the top 10 of more than 200 competitors from 31 school teams. Joshie Khohayting '28 finished second. Daniel Li '28 earned third place; Ella Wang '27, fourth; Maxie Wu '28, fifth; and Alex Tevelow '28, seventh. The students were led by coaches Jessica Merrick and Ed Lally.
