Nicolas Maynulet '23 and Alexis Tie-Shue '23 were named 2023 National Merit Scholars and will receive $2,500 scholarships as part of the 68th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students were among 2,500 scholarship recipients selected from about 15,000 finalists.
The National Merit Scholars are selected on the basis of exceptional accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state was proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
The scholarship recipients were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who considered each student's academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from the Preliminary SAT (PSAT); contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by each finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
