RE students attend Model United Nations in Portugal

Nineteen students in RE's Model United Nations club participated in the Iberian Model United Nations Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, from Nov. 5-10. With over 30 other schools from across Europe in attendance, RE was the only U.S.-based school, sending delegates to the General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council.
RE delegates lobbied their proposals, networking with students from several countries to craft solutions to the world's issues through dialogue, consensus building and simulated diplomacy, to arrive at mutually agreed resolutions representative of common will and values of the global community. The 30th anniversary of the conference, it was held at the Cultural Center Belem.

Apart from their conference activities, RE students and faculty members Stephen Allen and Laura Miller engaged in several cultural immersion activities including a walking tour of the historical Alfama district, which is the oldest and most characterful district of Lisbon, a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and traditional houses that meander up a steep hill to Sao Jorge castle. As well as seeing the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries and the Jerónimos Monastery, the group also took multiple opportunities to indulge in the famous Portuguese cuisine, enjoying breakfast at the famous Eat Pastéis de Belém and a wonderful dinner at a restaurant that featured a live Fado singing/show, for which Portugal is renowned.

The students immersed themselves not only in the conference, hosted and organized by the Carlucci American International School of Lisbon, but the cultural essence of the greater Lisbon metropolitan area, and served as ambassadors for RE with every step and interaction.
