Teams featuring RE students and alums will return for the second season of ABC's BattleBots, a robot-fighting competition that kicks off with a special preview at 10 p.m. May 10 before the first episode June 23. Greg Bales '17 and the rest of Team Mohawk – Alan Schimmel '09, Tom and Max Bales, Connie Ryan, Korey Kline and Christian Chiriboga – will compete in episode one.
Later in the season, Team Hypershock, which includes Will Bales '11, Tyler Bond '11 and Alex Mattaway '11 and has long been guided by RE teacher and robotics coach Robert DuBard, is expected to join the competition.
Team Mohawk and Hypershock fought in a qualifying round last year, pitting family and friends against each other. Connie and Tom are parents to Greg, Max and Hypershock's Will. When Mohawk's controller failed, Hypershock took advantage and advanced, eventually losing to Bite Force, the season one champion.
This year's series, "BattleBots: The Gears Awaken," will feature 48 robots fighting it out over 10 episodes in a series of "rumble matches," three-minute bouts among three robots seeking to destroy or disable each other.
Competitors range from NASA engineers to international teams to high school students.
