Two titles for swimming

The boys' and girls' swimming teams won Class 1A District 12 Championships at the Ansin Aquatic Center on Oct. 30, each topping a field of more than 10 schools as three young swimmers – Mattie Barfield '21, Sophie G '22 and Magnus Kron '21 – led their teams by capturing individual district titles and earning multiple medals. Two girls' relay teams also won gold medals.
RE's girls accrued 492 points overall, topping second-place Cutler Bay (330) and third-place Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart (255). The boys earned 398 points to surpass Cutler Bay (344) and Miami Country Day (267). The top two finishers in each event earned automatic bids to the regional meet Nov. 9 at Nova Southeastern University, and more may be invited depending on the results in other district championships.

Kyle Hastings, the new RE aquatics director and varsity swim coach, led both squads. The district championship was the 13th straight for RE's girls and fifth in a row for the boys.

RE's girls' 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays team both won gold. Barfield, Mereditch Hutchinson '20, Sophie G and Calliste Skouras '19 competed in the medley relay (1 minute, 57.53 seconds) and Skouras, Sarah Mesa '20, Alexa Hommen '22 and Sophie G, the freestyle relay (1:46.53).

Kron led an RE sweep of the boys' 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 1:55.04. Perry Samimy '20 earned second in 1:55.48 and Carson Hays '20 got third in 1:57.57. Barfield won the girls' 200 individual medley (2:21.95); and Sophie G topped the field in the 100 butterfly (1:02.20) as Sabrina Shipley '22 earned the silver medal (1:04.47).

Georgia Murphy '21 earned second in the girls' 200 freestyle (2:03.90); Kron won silver in the boys' 100 freestyle (53.21); Samimy and Carson Hays '20 finished second and third, respectively, in the boys' 500 free with Samimy touching the wall in 5:19.97 and Hays in 5:23.94. Barfield won the bronze medal in the girls' 100 backstroke (1:03.58); Alex Freedline '20 claimed the bronze in the boys' 200 individual medley; Dylan Stone '22 got third in the girls' 500 freestyle (5:59.68); and Hutchinson claimed third in the girls' 100 breastroke (1:16.93).

The boys' 200 yard freestyle relay team of Samimy, Hays, Kron and Freedline earned the silver medal (1:37.71). The girls' 400 freestyle team also finished second with Sophie G, Skouras, Barfield and Murphy.

The top two finishers in each event earned automatic bids to the regional meet Nov. 9 at Nova Southeastern University. At that meet, the three girls' relay teams and Barfield in the 100 backstroke earned invitations to the Class 1A state championship meet in Stuart, Fla., Nov. 16.
