    Local architect extends RE's Environmental Sustainability Speaker Series

    An expert in the construction of sustainable schools visited Ransom Everglades as part of RE's Environmental Sustainability Speaker Series, presenting an evening lecture on the topic of "Green Schools as Teaching Tools." Thorn Grafton shared insights on his work as Historic Preservation Architect and Sustainability Director at the firm Zyscovich, and he was joined in his presentation at the Posner Lecture Hall Nov. 20 by Connie Taudt-Ehrling '88, senior designer-manager at Zyscovich.

    Solar panels installed on the roof of the Fernandez STEM Center

    Ransom Everglades completed the installation of 156 solar panels on the roof of the Fernandez STEM Center in late September, an upgrade that will reduce RE's carbon footprint – and save money. The solar panels, which occupy nearly the entirety of the roof, are expected to produce 108,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, meeting 12 percent of the building's energy needs.

    Hundreds of original research projects highlighted during the eighth annual RE Climate Symposium

    The entire Ransom Everglades sixth grade and many other students displayed their creativity and passion for climate solutions during the eighth annual RE Climate Symposium, which showcased nearly 250 student research projects, climate-focused art installations and performances, a zero-waste meal and guest lecture by Howard University Associate Professor Helen Bond. The April 30 event opened in the Lewis Family Auditorium and continued with student poster presentations in the Fernandez STEM Center.

    Environmental photographers visit RE to celebrate Earth Day

    Ransom Everglades marked Earth Day with talks by two well-known photographers whose work has influenced conservation efforts. Ami Vitale, the founder of the art/storytelling conservation group Vital Impacts, spoke to middle school students at Swenson Hall. Benjamin Rusnack, who documented the tension between exploring and protecting the natural world as an artist-in-residence for the National Park Service, spoke to upper school photography students. The visits took place on April 22.

    Zoo Miami Goodwill Ambassador launches Earth Month at RE

    Ron Magill, a wildlife photographer and Goodwill Ambassador for Zoo Miami, helped Ransom Everglades launch its celebration of Earth Month by sharing the compelling story of K’wasi, the first male lion cub born at the zoo. Students at the April 2 assembly at the Lewis Family Auditorium oohed, ahhed and laughed along at K'wasi's tale, which was illustrated by Magill's extraordinary photography.
