RE boys' water polo wins district championship
Ransom Everglades' boys water polo team celebrated its second consecutive district championship victory – a convincing 12-8 victory over rival MAST Academy – by joyfully lifting the winner's trophy in front of cheering fans at the Ansin Aquatic Center on April 3. Jack Merrick '26 led the Raiders with an eight-goal performance and Oliver Friedland '26 and Milo Gorey '24 each chipped in two goals.
The victory in the Class 1A District 14 game sent the Raiders, who are 14-10 this season, into the regional playoffs with a rematch against MAST Academy at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School on April 9. In their only other meeting this season, the boys defeated MAST by one goal in overtime on Feb. 13.
The Raiders, led by leading-scorer Merrick and assist- and steals-leader Friedland, stand as the fifth-ranked team in the state.
The boys' victory came shortly after the girls' team fell just short of extending its 17-year district title winning streak with a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to MAST Academy. Sydney Gould '25 led the girls with three goals and Elly Kriplen '28 contributed two as Casey Manno '25 gave a strong performance in goal. The girls received a trophy for their runner-up finish. They also advanced to the regional playoffs, opening April 9 against Mater Academy at Belen.
Head coach Eric Lefebvre and assistant Petar Solomun led both teams.
The boys' and girls' teams earned places in the district championship with semifinals victories over Miami Beach Senior High earlier in the day. The boys won their game by a 15-11 margin behind a six-goal performance by Friedland and five goals by Merrick. Lincoln Broad '26 added two goals and goalie Warren Munroe '25 helped the Raiders preserve their lead.
The girls defeated Miami Beach 17-4 behind five goals from Gould and three each from Kriplen, Lucy Hansen '26 and Ellie Stokes '26. Vicky Pinilla '25 contributed two goals.
