Junior wins fourth place in international science and engineering fair

Ethan Thomas ’25 claimed fourth place at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines division for his research on artificial intelligence and the early detection of cardiovascular disease. The weeklong science and engineering competition in Los Angeles that concluded on May 17 drew 1,800 students from around the world. Thomas and Dieter Manstein '25 advanced to the competition after their successful presentations at regional and state fairs. They worked under RE STEM Department faculty member Sue Mactye. 
Thomas' project was entitled Syncardia: AI at the Heart of Early Cardiovascular Disease Detection and Manstein's project was Enhanced Antibacterial Effects of Blue Light in Combination with an Amazonian Tree Zap (Croton Lechlen).
