Award-winning financial journalist advises on ethics in business and journalism
Financial reporter and bestselling author David Faber addressed upper school students on the topic of ethics in business and journalism as part of the Holzman Center of Applied Ethics Speaker Series on April 7. Holzman Center Director John A. King Jr. interviewed Faber from the Lewis Family Auditorium stage before turning the questions over to students. Faber's visit to RE took place at the height of tariff anxiety and market volatility, providing fodder for pointed questions and follow ups.
An award-winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author, David Faber is a co-anchor of CNBC’s Squawk on the Street and an anchor and co-producer of CNBC’s acclaimed original documentaries and long-form programming. In 2024, New York Financial Writers’ Association awarded Faber with the Elliott V. Bell Award, which honors journalists who have made a significant contribution to the field of financial journalism.
Faber talked about the ease with which one unethical decision can lead to another, citing the stories surrounding Elizabeth Holmes and Sam Bankman-Fried, young entrepreneurs who were convicted of fraud and other crimes.
"It's a good lesson," he said. "You do anything once, and nothing happens, so you do it again ... You keep going down that road ... and you turn around one day and you're facing 10 years in jail."
Faber noted that to keep his reputation as a top financial journalist, it was critical that he stick to facts and truth.
"Business news is very different than political news," he said. "My audience cares about facts ... If you get it wrong, no one is going to listen to you in the future, because they just lost money."
