Solar panels installed on the roof of the Fernandez STEM Center
Ransom Everglades completed the installation of 156 solar panels on the roof of the Fernandez STEM Center in late September, an upgrade that will reduce RE's carbon footprint – and save money. The solar panels, which occupy nearly the entirety of the roof, are expected to produce 108,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year, meeting 12 percent of the building's energy needs.

The building is the second on the upper school campus to be outfitted with solar panels. Early in 2022, Ransom Everglades installed 305 solar panels on the roof of the Harry H. Anderson Jr. ’38 Gymnasium. In 2020, the RE board of directors promised that solar panels would be included on all new construction after listening to a pitch from the student group Students for Solar.
Madison Munroe '22, Wirth Munroe '22, Julian Stancioff '22 and Daniel Stancioff '23, founding members of that group, encouraged RE to become a local leader on environmental initiatives. After those students graduated, other upper schoolers including Will Charouhis '25 continued the sustainability efforts. Ransom Everglades also installed EV chargers on the upper school campus this fall. The chargers, which were inspired by a gift from the Class of 2022, will soon be available to members of the RE community.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida.
