Students examine ethical leadership to open the second semester

Ransom Everglades started the new year with a discussion of ethical leadership featuring three students – Sophia Linfield '26, Ana Gonzalez '26 and Alexandra Russoniello '26 – who are pursuing Applied Ethical Leadership certificates from Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder, a partner organization to RE and RE's Holzman Center of Applied Ethics. During the January 7 assembly, the students told their upper school peers that the foundation of ethical leadership consisted of trust, empathy and justice. They also shared insights from their respective independent research projects on restorative justice (Linfield), gentrification in west Coconut Grove (Gonzalez), and leadership during the Haitian revolution (Russoniello).
Rebecca Paresky '25 and McKenzie Connell '26 led a question-and-answer session with the students on the Lewis Family Auditorium stage. At the conclusion of the assembly, Reisha Yavagal '27 announced that the Holzman Center Student Advisory would be starting a philosophy blog that will include weekly blog posts, summaries of RE's medical ethics roundtables, a comment section open for discussion, and updates regarding the Holzman Center of Applied Ethics, which is under the direction of Associate Head of School John A. King Jr.

Linfield, Gonzalez, Russoniello and Connell were among nine Ransom Everglades students and one faculty member who traveled across the globe with Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder programs last summer to engage in learning service while reflecting on what it means to be an ethical leader. They were joined by Zarah Rizvi '27, Mackensie Wolfson '25, Chloe Coulson '25, Sara Cooper '26 and Margaret Seabrook '26, each of whom traveled on separate trips to the Peruvian Amazon, Peruvian Andes, Panama, San Diego and Tijuana, and Nepal. Director of Environmental Sustainability Kelly Jackson served as a trip leader for the Shoulder-to-Shoulder experience in Costa Rica. Read more.
