Preparing for middle school English courses will be completed on the NoRedInk computer program with the support of a Ransom Everglades Middle School English teacher. There will be optional weekly check-ins via Google Meet or Zoom, and the course should take about ten hours to complete. The summer review includes an introduction/review of grammar concepts as well as usage and mechanics. There are opportunities for writing as well. This program will enhance student performance in all middle grade English classes.
For rising sixth graders, the topics include sentence fragments and run-ons, punctuation, capitalization, and some parts of speech (Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs).
The following writing areas will be addressed:
Paragraph: Topic sentence, supporting details, concluding sentence
Journal writing
For rising seventh graders, the topics include apostrophes in contractions and possessive pronouns, sentence fragments and run-ons, punctuation, capitalization, and the eight parts of speech (Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections), and direct and indirect objects.
The following writing areas will be addressed:
Paragraph: Topic sentence, supporting details, concluding sentence
Essay: Thesis statement, in-text support, conclusion
Journal writing
For rising eighth graders, the topics include sentence fragments and run-ons, types of clauses, simple, compound, and complex sentences, punctuation, capitalization, subject-verb agreement, and direct and indirect objects.
The following writing areas will be addressed:
Paragraph: Topic sentence, supporting details, concluding sentence
Essay: Thesis statement, in-text support (MLA citations), conclusion
Integrating in-text support
Creative Writing: voice, word choice, creativity, descriptive language
Journal writing
For rising ninth graders, the topics include areas in which further review is recommended.
Through grammar practice, scaffolded writing activities, and assessments (diagnostics and quizzes), students should expect to realize gains in their mastery of English concepts.
